Diamond Comic Distribution is taking a step further as the largest comic book distributor in the U.S. Today the company launched Diamond Digital, which allows comic book stores to sell digital comics in-store or via the website. Comic stores can sell digital comics via redemption codes; readers who buy these codes from their local comic shop can redeem them on the Digital Reader website through Diamond Digital. The site will offer a digital version to accompany the print version of a comic for an additional 99 cents, as part of their “digital plus” service.
Diamond Digital launches with 4000 comics from Image, IDW, Archie, Arcana, BOOM!, Top Shelf, and other smaller publications. We’re wondering where big league publishers Marvel, DC, and Dark Horse are, not to mention the recently revived Valiant.
ComiXology is already established as the major digital comics platform. It provides all of the comics publishers that Diamond Digital seems to be lacking, as well as a selection of over 25,000 comics and graphic novels. What do you think of Diamond Digital stepping up their game to meet ComiXology?
