Marvel and ABC are in talks to bring the Avengers mythology to the small screen. Or more specifically, the mythology in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The prospective TV drama will be set in this universe and tie into the Avengers franchise, but may not feature any characters from the Joss Whedon masterpiece. Deadline described the project as “’a kernel of an idea’ with several scenarios being explored, including a high-concept cop show.” To me, this sounds like constructing the universe from non-superhero viewpoints. The hyped Marvel One-Shot ITEM 47 is about two normal citizens who get ahold of an alien gun during the aftermath of the Avengers battle; I’m hoping the ABC drama will utilize a similar concept. Since ABC is still searching for a writer to take on this series, we can only speculate.
The Avengers already star in their own animated series on Disney XD’s The Avengers: Earth’s Mightiest Heroes, soon to be replaced by Avengers Assemble. This possible ABC drama is the next obvious step, as Marvel and ABC are both owned by Disney. I’m still riding the high from seeing The Avengers when it debuted over two months ago, so today’s Marvel news made me think “that was fast.” I’d still watch it though, and hope for a Tom Hiddleston cameo.
