It’s that time of the year again, when we nerds take our passions a little less seriously and laugh at ourselves. Or watch someone make all the jokes for us and laugh at them. The Emmy Award-winning Robot Chicken will premiere their DC Comics Special on Sunday, September 9th. The special will kick off season six of the stop-motion sketch comedy show.I’m not a regular fan of Robot Chicken; I’ve only seen their Star Wars parodies and a couple of regular episodes. But when I saw an early trailer for their DC special at MegaCon last March, I vowed to keep an eye out for the special’s premiere. At their Robot Chicken panel, executive producer Matt Seinrich and writer Zeb Wells talked about the DC special and how they collaborated with Geoff Johns, which really psyched me up for it. Though the early MegaCon trailer was much longer, this most recent two-minute trailer isn’t far off mark.
As expected from a Robot Chicken special, the jokes look ridiculous, gruesome and violent. Expect puns, as well as body and bathroom humor. After watching the trailer, I’d say the villains will steal the show. I especially liked Lex Luthor’s cheerful displays of leadership at the Legion of Doom. Sadly, it looks like Aquaman is still the butt of every joke—come on, guys!—picked on by Superman, Wonder Woman and Green Lantern. I hope there’s an Aquaman sketch or two that shows him getting payback for all the bullying. We all know how New 52 Aquaman doesn’t take crap from anyone.
According to the DC Comics press release, the cast includes “Seth Green as Batman, Robin and the put-upon Aquaman, Neil Patrick Harris as Two-Face, Alfred Molina as Lex Luthor, Nathan Fillion as the Green Lantern, Megan Fox as Lois Lane, Breckin Meyer as Superman, plus Abe Benrubi, Alex Borstein, Clare Grant, Tara Strong, Matt Senreich, Tom Root, Zeb Wells, and Kevin Shinick as co-producer and narrator.”
