Kevin Eastman, co-creator of the, still awesome Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, is turning his attention to a new project called Lost Angeles. This six part mini-series by the writer-artist that will feature a story compromising elements of Escape from New York, The Warriors and Romeo and Juliet, all set in post-apocalyptic Los Angeles Landscape. Pairing Mikal, leader of the gang group The Stompers, with new Aztec princess, Angel, as the story’s star crossed lovers, Eastman hopes to bring together years worth’s of discussions and idea’s into a story that is “…nail biting along the way.”
Eastman, alongside Simon Bisley and Joe Pearson, has been developing the idea for nearly 8 years and the world, according to Eastman, looks to be very well fleshed out. The inception of the idea began with “what would LA look like if a bomb went off?” and expanded into “Simon and I really created the world of ‘Lost Angeles’ – the title, the world, how it got there, the basic origin story, the structure. We even broke down the different gangs, the different groups that would be components in the story, and had this structure in place.” Although, Eastman mentions that the book will have its fair share of high intensity action, he wants to ensure the story and characters do not suffer as a result and this slow creation process may very well be indicative of that. The early art by Bisley is very gritty and surreal and sets a perfect tone for what the series wants to deliver.
Hoping for this to be a jumping off point for subsequent stories in this universe or even movies, as was originally planned; Lost Angeles may be the beginning of a long line of stories. Be sure to look for these books by IDW publishing later this year.
