Geoff Johns, a Lebanese-American writer (and Chief Creative Officer) at DC, is making the debut of the first Arab-American Green Lantern, Baz, who will be introduced in Green Lantern #0. Johns will be signing at Green Brain Comics in Detroit on September 7th and appearing in two events at the Arab American National Museum the following day.
Baz’s introduction seems to play into the larger role of comics attempting to incorporate more racial diversity, versus solely having the white, heterosexual male heroes comics are known for. In fact, this year DC introduced a gay Green Lantern in the “Earth 2” titles series which takes place in an alternate Universe.
Johns will visit the Green Brain from 5 to 7pm on September 7th, so if you want to get your own edition of Green Lantern #0 signed by him, you’ll have to purchase it from the store (and keep it to two copies per person).
Additionally, “the two events at the Arab American National Museum on September 8th will also include an invite-only, superhero development workshop for local youth and a free public presentation on Johns’ career and work.” The public portion will take place from 4 to 6pm, with seating on a first come, first served basis, and the museum opens at 10am.
Green Lantern #0 will be on sale September 5th.
