Astro Boy is a classic manga that was written by the “father of manga” Osama Tezuka and holds the title for becoming the first Japanese produced TV anime. It’s also been attributed to shaping Japanese views on science and technology. The original series debuted in 1952 and if you weren’t around back then to read it, publisher Dark Horse offers a translation in print and digital formats. In honor of the classic manga, Dark Horse has created a featurette for anyone who is interested in learning more about Astro Boy.

Konnichiwa and welcome, to the first Manga & Anime News Roundup! Here is where you’ll find my news picks from the world of anime and manga for this week.

I love it when an manga series is brought to life and turned into an anime. So when it was announced that the 2011 ongoing manga NobunaGun is scheduled to become an anime I was stoked. Creator Masato Hisa - who is also well known for his stylish action manga Jabberwocky and Area 51 – recently announced the news.

Ghost in the Shell is a series that has remained a consistently strong concept and has often made us wonder where it all began. That’s where Ghost in the Shell: Arise comes in. Ghost in the Shell: Arise is a prequel that shows how the Section 9 team got together, as well as Motoko Kusanagi’s origin.

When Taiyo Matsumoto, of Tekkonkinkreet: Black & White fame, creates a new manga, I can’t help but take notice. The kids find themselves drawn to Sunny, a Nissan car that’s been abandoned in garden of the Orphanage.

Every week from now until eternity, we’ll be featuring totally badass artists from DeviantART that we think deserve more recognition. It’s awesome to find people whose art you admire, but this is the perfect venue to feature it so that others can admire it too! It’s also extremely awesome to see other people’s interpretations of well-known characters.
So enjoy!

After only being around for two years, on May 23rd, Square-Enix cutting its online Manga Store service in North America and Manga Boutique in France. The service initially launched in 2010, debuting at the Comic-Con Convention, as a way for foreigners to gain access to Japanese manga titles. With the advent of the internet, many titles – both obscure and popular – began appearing online illegally, so the manga store acted as a way to curb this.

I love Studio Ghibli films and one of my favorites is Kiki’s Delivery Service. This animated film is about a young witch who leaves home to strike out on her own and she has a few adventures along the way. If you haven’t watched it, I recommend that you do.
